The oil and gas representatives on the Texas Railroad Commission, meaning the Commissioners themselves, are taking up the cause of their poor, put-upon friend, Luminent Energy, the old TXU, who has continued to run their obsolete and dirty lignite plants into the ground the last 40 years instead of upgrading or trading them in for cleaner sources. Now, responding to a set of EPA regulations that were perfectly predictable years ago based on what the Bush Administration outlined, the company and it's spokespeople, both paid and elected, are complaining they've been ambushed and the whole of Western Civilization is going to collapse unless they're allowed a loophole to keep running dirty obsolete lignite coal plants. We've often scolded EPA for retreating in the face of industry and House Republican opposition, so it's only fair that we recognize the agency for doing its job. Just this month, new air toxics rules for the gas industry are scheduled to be released, along with a new ozone standard that will raise everyone's hackles, and the coal-fired power plant Mercury/air emissions rule that Texas is so desperately trying to avoid.
