That's just one of the many lovely epithets coming the way of a mild-mannered Texas Tech scientist who dared to share her opinion that climate change was real and being accelerated by human pollution. But Prof. Katharine Hayhoe's real mistake was agreeing to collaborate with aspiring presidential candidate Newt Gringrich on a chapter about the subject for a book he's trying to publish while courting voters who don't much take to that science stuff. Since he's already gotten so much grief for sitting on a couch with Nancy Pelosi warning about the dangers of global warming, Prof. Hayhoe's outburst of rational thinking was unfortunately timed. Gingrich backtracked, cancelled the book chapter, and then left the good Professor to swing in the wind, with her name and position out there for the likes of Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter to spotlight. As a result, lots of unhinged people, manly men who sound like they are not very secure in their masculinity, have sent her tons of vitriolic, over-the-top hate mail....like "You stupid bitch, You are a mass murderer and will be convicted at the
Reality TV Grand Jury in Nuremberg, Pennsylvania" and "I would like to see you convicted and beheaded by guillotine in the
public square, to show women that if they are going to take a man’s job,
they have to take the heat for mass murder, just like the men do when
they get caught. If you have a child, then women in the future will be
even more leery of lying to get ahead, when they see your baby crying
next to the basket next to the guillotine," and "Do you believe in God? If you do, then you must believe that He is all
powerful. But believing in AGW contradicts that, because to be able to
change the climate in such a manner as you prescribe to would mean that
we are more powerful than He is. I know better than that, but it would
appear that you don’t." The irony here is that Prof. Hayhoe is a devout Christian and comes to her belief in climate change and what to do about it both as a scientist and a believer. She's the daughter of missionaries and her husband is also a professor at Tech but heads an evangelical church as well. Her reaction is commendably calm - "I think that there is no question that much of this is intended to
intimidate. Just think about it. You sit down at your computer and you
write an email to someone you’ve never met and you tell that person that
they are a liar, that you hate them, that you’re disgusted by what they
do. What do you think you’re doing by doing that? You’re not setting
the person up to have a great day. And I think there’s an extra
dimension, because as a woman, most of the attacks that I’m receiving
are from men. So that has a very different dynamic to it that honestly
can feel very threatening and intimidating sometimes." The wave of e-mails Prof Hayhoe is getting echo the same kind of language that precedes attacks on workers and doctors at women's clinics that provide abortions. It should give pause to all those drumming up this nonsense, like Gingrich, who's never around to take responsibility for the messes they make. But it won't.
